Not so long ago, one-room schoolhouses with a single teacher were the main source of education for rural children in Ontario. Brooklin’s Spencer School (c. 1877) is a well-preserved example of a 19th century brick schoolhouse. The school was one of only five that served the Township of Whitby at that time, and continued to do so until 1965. The building is still in use as a Community Centre today.
In 2019, in association with Doors Open Whitby, a team of archeologists excavated the schoolyard. At our first Tea & History presentation of 2024, you’ll meet Dr. Hull, an archeologist involved in the project, and learn about the artifacts uncovered at the site!
